THE MATHS OF CHEMISTRY
Links between club-mates and era-mates are worth up to +3 OVR every match. Here is the exact formula and the strategy it creates.

How links work
Chemistry counts links between the players you've placed. Two players link if they share a club or share a season. Each player counts a maximum of three links, and your chemistry percentage is total links divided by the maximum possible (three per player). Eleven players from eleven different clubs and seasons: 0%. A core built around one great side: the percentage climbs fast.
What it's worth
Chemistry converts to an on-pitch bonus of up to +3.0 effective OVR, applied before match strength is computed — 33% chemistry is worth about +1, 66% about +2, and a full-links squad the whole +3. That is the difference between an 86 squad and an 89 squad, which in odds terms is roughly one full expectation band. It is the single biggest free upgrade in the game.
The real decision it creates
The classic draft dilemma: the wheel offers a 91-rated superstar from a club you own nobody from, or an 87 who links twice into your existing spine. The 87 is frequently correct — two links move the whole squad, while the 91 moves one slot. The exception is the true outliers (95+); a Ronaldo or Henry spin is worth breaking chemistry for.
Era-locked drafts stack chemistry naturally — fewer clubs, shared seasons — which is why a locked era XI often outperforms a higher-rated mixed side. Dynasty transfers should respect links too: signing into an existing club core protects the bonus for seasons.
Reading the meter
The chemistry line under your draft overall updates live with every pick and shows the exact match-day bonus. If the number stalls, look for the player whose links haven't materialised and plan their upgrade in the next reroll or, in Dynasty, the next window.
A worked example
Take a spine of five players from Arsenal's 2003 squad plus six unlinked picks. Each Arsenal player links with the other four, capped at three links apiece: 5 × 3 = 15 links. Maximum possible is 3 per player × 11 = 33, so chemistry reads 45% — worth about +1.4 OVR in every match. Swap one unlinked pick for a sixth 2003 Gunner and you jump to 55% and +1.6; the marginal pick was "worth" roughly two rating points more than his card shows.
Common chemistry mistakes
Three patterns cost players the bonus. Chasing rating in isolation — a lone 90 in a linked squad often lowers your effective strength versus the linked 87. Splitting your core — two half-cores of one club each (say four United, four Liverpool) links fine, but a 3–3–5 spread across three clubs caps everyone early; consolidate where the wheel allows. Forgetting seasons link too — two players from different clubs in the same season still link, which is how mixed-club era squads keep respectable percentages.
