HOW THE MATCH ENGINE WORKS

Your season is not a dice roll. Here is the pipeline from eleven player ratings to a full-time verdict — and what you control at each step.

From eleven ratings to one number

When your squad is complete, the engine reduces it to a single underlying strength built from your squad average. Formation applies attacking and defensive multipliers on top — a 4-3-3 tilts attack, a 5-4-1 tilts defence — and squad chemistry adds up to +3.0 to the effective average before strength is computed. That effective number drives everything: pre-season odds, match simulation, and the plausibility of a title push.

What the pre-season odds are telling you

The odds card on the squad screen is not decoration — it is the engine's honest read of your effective average against the league. As a rule of thumb from the tuning: squads averaging in the low 80s profile as top-half sides, mid-80s as European contenders, and you need high-80s effective strength before "title favourites" is realistic. If the odds look wrong to you, check chemistry first — a +2 link bonus moves you a full band.

Inside a simulated match

Each of the 38 fixtures is simulated event-by-event: goals are generated minute-by-minute with scorers and assists drawn from your actual XI, weighted by position and rating — which is why your Golden Boot race in a Dynasty season almost always features your forwards, but a marauding 90-rated midfielder can steal it. Results feed a running form strip, and clean sheets, biggest win and goal difference are tracked for the final review.

Difficulty, rerolls and variance

Difficulty changes your draft resources, not the match maths: easy gives three rerolls, normal one, hard none. The simulation itself is honestly random within its weightings — an 88-average squad will usually finish top four, sometimes win the league, and occasionally have a nightmare. Across many runs the averages hold; in any single season, variance is the drama. The 38-0 guide covers how far preparation can bend that variance.

The final verdict

Full-time, the engine grades the season — points, finish position, and the headline verdict (an unbeaten 38 earns INVINCIBLE). In Dynasty, that finish is also measured against the board's objective, which is where manager rating takes over. Every number on the results screen comes from the same pipeline described here: eleven ratings in, one season out.

A worked expectation

Concrete numbers help. An 88 effective average (say an 86.5 squad with strong chemistry) typically lands in the 78–92 point band: most seasons finish top four, a good share win the league, and roughly one run in ten goes sideways with 60-something points. Drop to an 82 effective average and the centre of gravity moves to 55–70 points — European places on a good day. The engine is honest about this before kick-off: the odds card is those distributions, summarised.

What you control — and what you don't

You control the inputs: eleven ratings, the formation multipliers, and the chemistry bonus. You do not control the dice inside a single match — and that is deliberate. A deterministic sim would make every 88-average season identical and killing the replay value; honest variance is why an unbeaten 38 is an achievement rather than a checkbox, and why a mid-table squad occasionally produces a season you screenshot.
